News - 001
President Bernard Wanjala
Dear colleagues
We are almost concluding on regional qualifiers and turn our full focus on National Youth Chess Championship 2024.
Chess Kenya has made effort to have representatives in most of the regional qualifiers and picked a few issues to be addressed:
1. Late registration - most regional coordinators provided link for online registration, however, some schools didn't register and only show up in the morning with students. Some register just a handful and in the morning turn up with double or more numbers. This puts alot of pressure to organisers and sometimes it's difficult to mobilize additional resources (boards, seats and tables).
2. Late start and end of the tournament. Late registration causes unnecessary delays as organisers try to accommodate the late comers. This has let to serious administrative issues with schools, students arriving late or travelling back outside official hours provided by law. We will make recommendations for future adoption on latest time the tournament can end.
3. Conflict of interest in Arbitration- The teachers or coaches involved in arbitration are accused of making decisions that favour their students or openly given tips to their students during the game.
This issues are weight and Chess Kenya will relook at them comprehensively and have them addressed in our future events.
Chess Kenya officials also collected a number of first hand feedback from various stakeholders regarding proposed changes in coming Kenya national youth chess championship 2024. Three major concerns:
1. Introduction of rest day. Majority feel it's not necessary and will add to cost of attending the tournament. Preliminary discussions agree with this observation and the final approval by executive is being sought to have it scrapped off. Official communication will be made and adjustment on online form cost will be made to put this into consideration.
2. Play off/top 10 finals. This proposal has been greatly welcomed. However, the general feeling is the play offs should not be held in Mombasa since it will be holiday season,it's very expensive to take players to Mombasa and their care givers. Chess Kenya has put this into consideration and is seeking alternative venue in Nairobi,a more central venue.
3. Improve organisation level from previous National championship- gaps noted from previous championship to be addressed- accomodation,Toilet cleanliness, tournament management and provision of sitting area for parents/coaches. This has seriously been put into consideration.
The success of event requires cooperation with all stakeholders involved.
Just to be on record, the coming Kenya national youth chess championship 2024 will have many casualties who are used to registering late,we are focusing on better organisation and therefore even if we will have 100 players by deadline, the tournament will proceed with this numbers to avoid past challenges that usually punish those registered on time.
All registration will be strictly online, for transparency, all registered including accompanying persons will be displayed live and everyone can confirm their names real time.
Incase you have any challenges or enquiries, you can reach any of us indicated in the invitation letter.
Regards
Benard Wanjala
Chess Kenya President
